Hang Your Baby Up?

February 14, 2008 - Tag: News - Comments (0)

I spotted this new idea for a baby carrier over on TrendInsiders blog.

It is an infant carrier that you can use to hang your baby up over a door or cubicle, for example when in public toilets or changing rooms, or perhaps even at home.

Part of me feels its a great idea, as it can be a difficult job going to the toilet when one is out shopping alone with one’s baby.

However, another part of me questions the safety aspect of hanging a baby from any kind of door or cubicle divider, and I feel its yet another gadget or gizmo to add to the hundreds that we have in the western world that we could live without.

What do you think?

Maternity Care in the UK ‘fails women’

January 28, 2008 - Tag: News - Comments (0)

I recently came across an article on the BBC news website which describes the varying standards of NHS care for women during pregnancy and birth.

I am lucky that I had a positive birthing experience in my local community hospital (although, much to the disgust of the community, it is set to close in the next year). However, the difference in care across the UK first became apparent to me when I was told at my first ante natal appointment that a 12 week dating scan was not routine in the area I lived. I was furious as, after having several friends in different parts of the country have one, I was expecting one too. It is a similar situation for the nuchal fold scan, which is offered in some areas and not others, is free in some areas and over £100 in others.

So I guess the BBC news article should not have been ‘news’ to me at all, and is probably not too much of a surprise to most people, given the great variety in standards of care as a whole across the NHS in the UK.

A New Arrival and New Beginning

October 11, 2007 - Tag: News - Comments (0)

I am pleased to announce the arrival of a son, born in July. He kept us waiting, being 10 days overdue, but now he is finally here and three months old already!

So after a long dry spell in terms of blogging I am now just about able to find a little bit of time each day to hopefully post a few times each week. Watch out for more posts soon!

Babylune Group Writing Project Results

June 19, 2007 - Tag: News - Comments (2)

I recently mentioned the Babylune group writing project that was running last week. Many congratulations to the winner - The Weary Parent, who wrote about one mistake she has made with each child.

I enjoyed reading them all but here is my pick of the bunch:

I particularly enjoyed the entry by Mama Zen who wrote about the mistake of allowing someone else to make her feel bad about the decisions she has made for her daughter. It really hit home, what with all the different and contradictory pieces of advice there are out there about parenting.

I found the post by Hamelife about co-sleeping with your child really interesting. Co-sleeping is generally discouraged here in the UK and although I am not personally in favour of it myself (at the moment at least) I find it very interesting to read about the different arguments surrounding the issue.

‘The F***ing mistake’ entry by The Doc is in makes very amusing reading.

You can read the full list of entries on the Babylune blog.

The winner, The Weary Parent, is now running a new group writing project, for which my entry will follow soon.

Babylune Group Writing Project

June 11, 2007 - Tag: News - Comments (3)

I read over on Babylune blog about a group writing project that is taking place this week.

Here is what the author has to say about it:

Tell us all about a parenting mistake you’ve made, what you’ve learned from it and how you’re trying to make sure it will never happen again.

By entering the project you will benefit from additional links to your blog plus the chance to win Amazon vouchers or virtual cash to the value of $24.95. The deadline for entries is midnight on Thursday 14th June.

The idea for the project was inspired by the likes of the Problogger project that I entered with my post - How To Budget For A New Baby - 5 Top Tips.

Unfortunately, as I am not yet a parent, I am not able to enter the competition. That is, unless baby decides to put in an appearance within the next few days and then I make a mistake which I have time to write about!

Good luck to all entrants. I will be summarising posts from the competition at a later date, so watch this space.
